Built in 1850 in the tiny hamlet of Force Forge, Knott Cottage has had many lives. Originally it was a forester’s home. It has had a life as a bobbin-maker's workshop, with links to the water-mill, and at one time was the Post Office for the valley. It still has all its original character, but is now a warm, cosy home.
We are Helen and Kate: sisters and co-owners of Knott Cottage.
We have been coming to the Lake District since we were tiny, and our family connections go back even further, with our grandparents and parents having spent holidays here before we were born.
We bought Knott Cottage in 2023. And it opened up a new area of the Lakes to us: this quieter, wooded valley with its own unique character and welcoming community.
Knott Cottage is more than a holiday home for us: it is a connection to this special part of the world, and a connection to our Dad, who we lost in 2022. He would have loved it.
It is also a chance to try and do something different. We want to make Knott a carbon neutral home. We want to make the land a place for a huge diversity of wildlife.
While working towards these ambitions we wanted to open up the house to friends and friends of friends who would share them, and who would appreciate this place. We don’t want it to be empty when it could be enjoyed.
Whether you are looking for peace and rest, or a base of exhilarating walks or rides, we hope you find what you need here at Knott Cottage, as we have.
