The field by the house is an on-going project. We have split and diverted the beck near the top to create two ponds. This is both for the wildlife and for water management. We have planted nearly 200 native trees and thousands of flower and plant plugs.
There is already a huge array of wildlife that visit: Red and roe deer, owls, buzzards, heron, pine-marten, field mice, stoats, frogs and toads, moles and slow-worms.
There is a book in the cottage to add your own nature-sightings.
The hamlet of Force Forge is a few houses scattered along the Force Beck. There is a magnificent set of water-falls just a few hundred metres from the cottage.
The village of Satterthwaite is a mile away – and you can walk there mostly off-road through the woods. It has our local: The Eagle’s Head. Say hello to Bob, the pub dog.
The valley and the wider lakes. The Grizedale Forest has miles of paths and cycle tracks as well as an adventure playground and café. At the top of the valley is the village of Hawkshead which has a shop and lots of lovely tea-rooms and walks. Windermere and Coniston are both close by. And Ambleside is less than half an hour drive, and the market town of Ulverston is 20 minutes.
